Dahlgren, whose term was to expire in December 1897.  (From the SCE Sept. 4, 1897 as reported in the Commerical Appeal)

Biography - A. M. Dahlgren, retiring Customs Collector of the Pearl River District was born in Natchez in 1856.  His parents were General Charles G. Dahlgren, CSA and Mary M. Routh, whose father was one of the first settlers of the Territory of Louisiana.  Gen. Dahlgren was the son of the first Swedish consul to America, as was also USN Admiral John A. Dahlgren, the inventor of the breech-loading cannon named after him, the Dahlgren gun, Collector Dahlgren's uncle.

Mrs. Sarah A. Dorsey. the well known novelist and linguist, was a sister of Collector Dahlgren.  She is also well known as the benefactor and friend of ex-President Jefferson Davis, to whom she bequeathed the well-known property at Beauvoir, Miss. and two cotton plantations in Louisiana on account of his services to the Confederacy.

  A. M. Dahlgren was elected to the Legislature of Miss. from Harrison County in 1891 for a term of four years, which position he resigned after serving only two years to accept the position of Collector of Customs of the Pearl River District under President Cleveland in November, 1893.

Mr. Dahlgren studied law under President Jefferson Davis for five years at Beauvoir, Miss.  After graduating, he with Gen. Joseph R. Davis established the "Seashore Gazette" at Pass Christian in 1877.

In the legislature of 1892 he introduced the bill calling for a deep water harbor convention to be held at Mississippi City in May, 1892, of which convention he was chairman, and there were represented 15 Southern and Western States.  He has been an earnest advocate for a deep water harbor on the seacoast of Mississippi for the past 23 years.

Mr. Dahlgren retired from active politics to resume the practice of his profession, the law, with offices at Gulfport and Biloxi.

Mr. Dahlgren has built two new Custom Houses and made the removal of three other Custom Houses necessary, greatly to the credit of the Government and for the convenience of its patrons. -  Line drawing picture of Dahlgren - (N.O. Times Democrat, August 19, 1898, p.6 from Bay St Louis August 18, 1898).
