Hayward, Major, of St. Louis, Mo., is registered at the Crescent.  (SCE 12/17/1892)

Hayward, Susan - An Auction Sale - The residence and furnishing of Miss Susan Hayward, a maiden lady long deceased, who lived near Biloxi, went under the auctioneer's hammer one fine morning at the beginning of March (1927 ?).  The event was extensively advertised and people came from far and near.  Automobiles were parked in double rows for over a mile on both sides of the road.  Some had come to bid on the collection and others to pass the time.

Art collectors and antique dealers rubbed shoulders with interior decorators and women of fashion.  Here were French beds with satin-quilted canopies, highboys, lowboys, rosewood chairs and tables, oil paintings, etchings, books, jewels, china and crystal.  I had spied some rare old volumes and made my way to the room where they were piled on a Duncan Phiffe(sic) table.

I sat on the foot of a four-poster bed and awaited my time.  The books I coveted were the poems and prose works of Hannah Moore, published in London in 1775.  They were beautifully bound and illustrated with signed steel engravings, each a little jewel.  Everything in the room was sold before the auctioneer came to the books.  Even the bed on which I was sitting, which went for $25!  At last I was permitted to start the bidding.  An elderly, gray-haired dowager in front of me began a campaign against me.  But I finally got them, for which I considered a song, and came away proud in my possession. ("Way Down South" Vol. 5 No. 6 - March-April 1928) (MJS IX 00127)

Hazen, L. A. -  Landrieu, Mr. Victor, has sold his "Union Cottage" on Union street to Mr. L. A. Hazen, from the North.  (SCE 03/04/1893)

Hazen, Mr. L.A., the new proprietor of the Union Cottage, is a gentlemen of modern ideas and of great taste.  We so judge him by his plans on which the mentioned property is being improved and beautified.  In a short space of time the plain and ordinary cottage will give the appearance of a stylish and elegant structure of modern architecture. Such progressive men as Mr. Hazen will always find a cheerful welcome at the Bay. (SCE 04/01/1893)
