To Senor Baron de Carondelet, Now Orleans
I am placing in the hands of Your Lordship the accompanying memorial from the inhabitants of Pascagoula.
They consider it certain that, the presents which the Indians now go to get at Orleans[which is their reason for passing along those roads] were given them here [mobile] or in Pensacola, the injuries from which the inhabitants suffer would cease. I replied to them that the government could do no less than give the presents to the Indians in the place which would be most favorable too the royal interests. This undoubtedly is that of Orleans, and I would petition Your Lordship, to charge the interpreter Tornaret to tell the Indians, on your behalf of Your Lordship, not to commit those offenses.
God keep Your Lordship many years.

Jackson House - #1 J. A. Cuevas List (VF MJS III 00350)
Built at the time of the Battle of New Orleans (1815) for General Jackson by J. J. Johnston, who came from Virginia. It was located at the Northeast corner of the park site in the trees that face the Mississippi Sound. The timber was taken from the area with axe and saw. Wooden pegs were used to hold the structure together. The flooring was 4 x 6 boards and the bricks (made on the place) for the foundation were held together with tar made from fat pine. Just as the house was completed, it burned to the ground.
At the time of the fire General Jackson was in New Orleans. He came to Shieldsboro (Bay St. Louis), paid Mr. Johnston for his work and ordered him to rebuild the house. Timber for the second house came from a little mill on Bayou Gallere. Pegs and square nails were used to fasten the timbers. General Jackson never occupied the house, but his nephew, __________________________ occupied it for a time. (History of Hancock County, WPA Writers.) (Along the Gulf, William E. Meyers.) (VF)
