1845, March 1 - Commodore Jones
The Judge Advocate of the Naval Court Martial sitting in Washington for the trial of Capt. Voorhees (in an Argentine incident), having made allusion to the name of Commodore Jones in connection with the affair of Monterey, the Commodore has had the following letter published in the Union to show the Government of the day thought of his conduct on that occasion: Navy Department, March 1, 1845
Sir: .... The President has authorized me to say to you,
that in those circumstances of your conduct, while in
command of the Pacific squadron, which induced your
recall, on explanation he perceives evidences of an ardent
zeal in the service of your country, and a devotion to
what you deemed to be your duty, regardless of personal
consequences, which entitle you to anything but censure
from your Government.
Ample allotment having been made to Mexico for your acts
complained of, there has been no disposition to visit you
with punishment of any description, for conduct actuated
by such elevated principles of duty. Of this you were
apprized immediately after your return.
The Department has been, and still is, anxious to give
you employment; in this wish the President concurs, and it
will give him the greatest pleasure to see you speedily
placed in a situation corresponding with your rank and
merits.
I am, respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
J. Y. Mason
Secretary of the Navy
Commodore Thos. Ap C. Jones
