Ruhr, William -  Our sister town, Waveland, is having her shell road put in good condition.  A force of workingmen are at work building a new culbert (culvert) and straightening the road in front of Dr. Walker's place.  The work is under the able supervision of Mr. Wm. Ruhr, Wm., was elected President in the twenty-fourth annual election of officers for the Independent Hope Hook and Ladder Fire Company, No. 1, held at their hall last Monday night.  Other results were as follows: R.S. Knight, vice-president;  foreman, R. Attaway; first assistant foreman, J.J. Manieri;  second Assistant foreman, Louis Fayard; treasurer, E. Murtagh; secretary; flag bearer, Charles Chadwick; banner bearer, F. Fayard; engineer, J.P. Foster.  The officers elected are worthy and all well qualified for the trust reposed in their care and the honors bestowed. (SCE 7/29/1893)

 

Ruhr, Mr. William, Waveland Town Marshal, on Monday evening lost his pocket book containing a large sum of money and some valuable papers, fortunately, after a diligent search, it was found the same evening on St. Joseph's Street. (SCE 11-18-1893)

Russ, Mr. Archie.  In the selection of Mr. Archie Russ as candidate for the treasuryship of Hancock, by the Democratic voters of the county, the people have acted wisely.  To him the public fund can well be entrusted, and he will no doubt discharge the duties of the office with as much credit and honor as the gentlemen he will succeed. Russ, Mr. Ernest, of Pearlington, who had been ill for several weeks, is out again.  His little, Thomas Jacob, who was the ideal pet of the whole family, succumbed to a spell of protracted illness.  His remains were laid at rest in the Pearlington cemetery, witnessed by a large concourse of friends and relatives.  (SCE 05/06/1893)

  Russ, Horace A. - A Hancock County truly native artist was Horace A. Russ, who was born at Logtown, in 1887. His parent were Van and Lorraine Russ:

 

  He received his primary education in a one teacher, one room school in Logtown and his high school education at Warren Easton High School, New Orleans. He did extension work at Tulane University, Louisiana State University, Columbia University and the Pennsylania Academy of Fine Arts.  He held the position of instructor in the Industrial Art Department of Warren Easton High School from 1912 to 1925. Was then transferred to the Department of Fine Arts where he served through the 1930's.  Horace A.  Russ was one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans, served on the Board of Directors and as director of the Art School. He was one of the founders and charter members and president of the New Orleans Art League composed of men and organized membership in the league on the merits of his work. He was also on the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Art Association, one of the oldest art associations in the South being founded in 1902. He was on the membership jury of the Southern States Art League. To be eligible for membership in this League, a person had to be born in the South or have lived there for five years and be a working artist.
