The sale of the property, perhaps better known to older residents as "the tannery", liquidated the last of the affairs of the Ladies' Minerva Mutual and Aid Association, organized in this city 20 years ago.
Mme. C. Gardebled, the originator was elected its first president and held the office for twenty consecutive terms. There being no other organization of the kind, the Minerva Association flourished, and its treasury was in such a good condition that it was not long before a hall was purchased. The tannery building, with its spacious grounds, was acquired by purchase, rehabilitated and part of it rented, while the upper floor was used as a meeting place. With the advent of women's insurance and fraternal orders, the Minerva Association failed to draw. Some members left the city, a number were removed by death, others resigned to join the newer orders. Finally the number dwindled down to a dozen; but this number stood together in a solid phalanx, paid their dues and kept the association going. There were: Mrs. C. Gardebled, Mrs. R. Blaize-Fayard, Miss Z. Nicaise, Mrs. Casimere Fayard, Miss Hortense Fayard, Mrs. C. Capdepon, Mrs. F. Banderet, Mrs. Mary Clinger, Miss Madeline Gardebled, Mrs. Florence Smelker, Mrs. D. H. Boyle.
At last, since the association had become inactive, compared with former times, it was decided to surrender the charter to the State and liquidate its assets. Messrs. Cazeneuve and Bordage signified a willingness to purchase the property, and the deal was accordingly consummated.
The money was equally distributed among the twelve remaining members, each lady receiving $75 as her pro rata share. And thus falls the curtain of ____ on the Ladies' Minerva Mutual and Aid Association, after an existence of twenty years..
Its last officers were: President, Mrs. Gardebled, vice president, Mrs. R. Blaize-Fayard; Secretary, Miss Z. Nicaise. (From a newspaper of unknown date and source - VF Gardebled).
