"Sectionalism in Territorial Mississippi, 1797 to 1817 -An introduction to the study of Sectionalism in That State" by W.B. Hamilton, Jr.  -  1934 Voting for site of State Capital of Mississippi on August 7, 1817, Shieldsborough was voted on the second ballot 24 to 20.  All the delegates from east of the Pearl River voted for the town as did the Wilkinson delegation.  This vote was reconsidered, however, and on a later ballot Natchez was selected by a single vote which was by the transposition of that of Knox of Franklin (County), the rest of the east remaining adamant.  On possibility of boundary line (eastern limits with Alabama Territory) William Lattimore proposed all settlers in Pascagoula District be included in Mississippi.  The Pascagoulans were reported as preferring to be in Alabama but would rather not be divided.  (from above document)
