Koepler, Mr. -  Altgeld, Hon. John P., governor of Illinois, accompanied by State Treasurer R.N. Ramsay, Dr. Progne, the Governor's physician, and Mr. Koepler, confidential clerk, arrived here Friday evening direct from Ashville, N.C., where the party had been spending a week.  The Chief Executive and party remained at the Bay a day or two in their own private car, and after enjoying the delights of the Bay, left for St. Augustine, Fla.  Mr. Altgeld was deeply and favorably impressed with the beauty and attractiveness of the Bay and wished to have been able to prolong his stay.  (SCE 02/11/1893)

Kolstad, Richard

 

  Richard "Ike" Olsens Kolstad, 73, a resident of Bay St.

 

Louis since 1964, and a native of Parkville, Minn., died

 

Tuesday, Nov 5, 1996.

 

  He served in World War II on the USS Ranger, USS Wasp, the USS Hornet and the USS San Jacinto in the VT51 Squadron with

 

President George Bush.  He also served in Korea aboard the USS Princeton, Mr. Kolstad served 16 years in the U. S. Navy and six years in the Air Force.  He was a member and officer of the Post Polio Syndrome Organization, the American Legion

 

Post 77, and the Sergeants Association and Disabled Veterans

 

Association.  He received the Air Medal with Cluster and various other commendations for his service in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  During the Pacific battles of

 

Guadalcanal, Coral Sea and Tarawa, the torpedo planes in which he served as a radio-gunner were shot down.  His plane crew was responsible for the first sighting of the Japanese fleet at the battle ofSan Bernadino Straights.  He also saw action at Midway, Okinawa and Layte Gulf and participated in the Mariana Turkey Shoot.

 

  Mr. Kilstad, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, will be missed by his wife of 51 years,

 

Lola Austin Kilstad, a native of Virginia, Minn. and a resident of Bay St. Louis; three daughters, Margo Campbell of Killeen, Texas, Lauly Peterson of Bay St. Louis, Karleen

 

Tignor of Jackwson; and two sons, Richard Kilstad of Balm,

 

Fll, and William Kolstad of Bay St. Louis; a sister, Ingeborg Bennett of Olympia, Wash. and two brothers, John Olsen of Olympia and Fred Olsen of Phoenix, Ariz; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

 

  A privatae memorial service will be held Friday, Nov 29 at

 

Bayou LaCroix Cemetery.  (SCE)
