Brashear, Brother Firmin (Allie Isidore Brashear)  -  August 18, 2000

Brother Firmin Brashear, S.C., a member of the New Orleans Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, died at the St. Stanislaus Brothers' Residence in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Friday morning August 18, 2000. He was 89 years old and a resident of Bay St. Louis for the past 48 years.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on November 13, 1910, Allie Isidore Brashear entered the congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Metuchen, New Jersey, in 1929. He pronounced first religious vows on August 15, 1931, and took the religious name Brother Firmin. He made his perpetual vows as a Brother of the Sacred Heart on August 6, 1937, at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis.

From 1932 to 1952, Brother Firmin taught in the Brothers' schools in Metuchen, New Jersey; Muskogee, Oklahoma; Mobile, Alabama; Vicksburg, Mississippi; and Alexandria, Louisiana. After teaching for 20 years, he served another 20 years of active ministry as treasurer at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, until he suffered a major stroke which forced his total retirement in 1972. From that time until his death, Brother Firmin spent his convalescent years at St. Stanislaus where he accepted his many infirmities in good spirits and bravely battled blindness, hearing impairment, and diabetes. He was released from Hancock Medical Hospital Wednesday of this week, following a mild stroke. He died peacefully in his bedroom, sitting in his favorite rocking chair.

Brother Firmin is survived by two brothers, Joseph Leon Brashear of Baker, Louisiana, and Charles Bill Brashear of Baton Rouge; and one sister, Mrs. Elma Chaney, also of Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in Brother Firmin's name to St. Stanislaus College, the school he loved so much.

Wake services will be conducted at St. Stanislaus school chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, August 20 with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also take place on Monday, August 21, in the St. Stanislaus school chapel from 2 to 4 p.m. followed by the Mass of Christian burial at 4 p.m. Interment will be in the Brother's cemetery in Bay St. Louis. Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis is in charge of the arrangements.
