Layne, Thomas  -  July 9, 1999

Thomas Gaither Layne, 77, of Bay St. Louis, died Friday, July 9, 1999 in Gulfport.

Mr. Layne was a native of Lebanon, Tenn., and had been a resident of Hancock County for 57 years. He was a Baptist and was a member of the Elks of Slidell, VFW Post 3253 of Bay St. Louis, DAV No. 50 of Bay St. Louis, American Legion Post 139 of Bay St. Louis, AARP and the Louisiana Governors Committee from 1982 to 1986. He was a special agent with the State of Louisiana Commissioners Office and served in the Army in World War II, where he received the American Service Medal and a Victory Medal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Harris and Mary Gaither Layne; four brothers, James W. Layne, Joe R. Layne, Robet Layne and Fred Layne; and a sister, Elizabeth Clark.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Layne II of Bay St. Louis, Joe Richard Layne of Rockport, Texas and James William Layne of Naples, Fla.; four daughters, Cheryl Crawford of Westerville, Ohio, Claudia Layne Weheeler, Cynthia Fay Layne Fricke and Mary Rebecca Layne, all of Bay St. Louis; and a sister, Julia Frances White of Carmel, Calif.

Visitation was Monday evening at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis. Services were conducted Tuesday in the funeral home chapel. Burial was in Biloxi National Cemetery.
