Among the imposing landmarks is Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, the tower of which rises sentinel-like from a point of land overlooking the merging of bay and gulf. Just next door is St. Stanislaus, one of the oldest Catholic boarding schools in the South. On down Beach Avenue, graceful old homes surrounded by moss-draped oaks, magnolias and palms look out with
quiet dignity across the usually calm water. Only an occasional empty lot or brand new house reminds orle of the havoc wrought in the community in 1969 by Hurricane Camille.
There have always been close ties with New Orleans, only 60 miles to the west. In fact, the whole Mississippi Gulf Coast region is closer in spirit <o New Orleans than to Jackson, the state capital. Like New Orleans, a city which still considers itself French, the Gulf Coast region prides itself on being much more cosmopolitan than the rest of Mississippi.
For decades, Bay St. Louis has been weekend and summer home to many New Orleans families. There used to be a “Commuter Special” train that left New Orleans about 5 p.m. for the coast. On summer Friday afternoons when it arrived in Bay St. Louis, a host of men in business suits would descend from the club car, drinks in hand, to be met by station wagons full of wives and children who had “moved to the Bay” for the summer. Many of these families liked the town so much they moved there permanently.
