PAGE 3 - PROFILE
HISTORY
Discovered by the early french explorers d'Iberville and Bienville in 1699, the City of Bay St. Louis, the county seat is located on the predominant ridge on which the early explorers first landed. From this bluff spreads out a small but quaint art and antique community with a business/ government area. Numerous tourist attraction fill this small community, from the famous "Cities of the Dead" cemeteries, to the unique architecture of the City Hall. Site of the only execution in Hancock County's history, the City Hall is a combination of three revival style architectures and once included the city jail. The back door of the city jail was the most popular site of "White Lightening" purchases and caused Bay St. Louis to be hailed as the "Moonshine Capital of the Nation." Delicious small restaurants are interwoven with the antique shops. The Hancock County Historical Society operates the Kate Lobrano House on the side of the Courthouse in downtown Bay St. Louis.
Waveland, like Bay St. Louis, is a site where numerous New Orleanians came to enjoy the cooler climate of the Gulf Coast. Vacation houses on the beaches owned by wealthy planters and merchants have added much to the ambience of the area.
North of Interstate 10, which cuts Hancock County into separate regions, the forestry jSfod agricultural industry has been the predominant (" lifestyle with the exclusion of the Diamondhe Community.
Diamondhead is a 6,400 acre resort / re\ tirement community. Its residents enjoy four large community swimming pools, eight tennis course, two golf courses, a county club, yacht* private air strip, stable, plus a healih'cfncNit' club. The Diamondhead area, with an ^lev^tK 110 feet is the highest coastal prope Florida and the Texas Coast.
