IN 7855 ST* JOSEPH'S ACADEMY HAD ITS BEGINNING IN 7M E ARRIIV/L FRCM FRANCE OF THREE CATHOLIC NUNS, SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH, WHO CAME AS THE RESULT OF AN APPEAL FROM FATHER BUTEUX FOR TEACHERS FOR GIRLS OF THIS AREA* IN 7866 THE ACADEMY HAD 45 BOARDERS, AND ADDITIONAL BUILDINGS WERE ERECTED. THE ENTtRE SCHOOL WAS DESTROYED EY FIRE IN 790T, BUT A NEW AND GREATLY ENLARGED SCHOOL WAS BEGUN AT ONCE. LUKE ST. STANISLAUS IT HAS MANY BOARDERS FROM LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES, AS WELL AS LOCAL DAY PUPILS, AND RANKS, HIGH ALSO IN SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEM ENTS*
PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN HANCOCK COUNTY BEGAN IN 7870 WITH THE APPOINTMENT OF J.J. BRADFORD AS FIRST COUNTY SUP B* I NT EN DENT OF EDUCATION. BY 7890 THERE WERE SEVEN ONE-TEACHER SCHOOLS ALONG THE COAST, OWE OF WHICH1 WAS AT WAVELAND AND ONE AT BAY ST. LOUIS. THE BAY ST. LOUIS SCHOOL'S FIRST TEACHER WAS J.T* EAGAN, ASSISTED Bf MRS. FELIX SAUCIER. FROM THUS BEGINNING DEVELOPED THE LARGE AND UP-TO-DATE BAY HIGH SCHOOL SYSTEM OF TODAY WITH ITS AUXILIARY WEBB AND TAYLOR SCHOOLS* THE VALENA C. O0NES SCHOOL FOR COLORED CHILDREN BEGAN IN 7906 AND TODAY IS A LARGE, MODERN SCHOOL SERVING COLORED STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.
ST. ROSE DE LIMA IS AN EXCELLENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOR COLORED GIRLS, AND ST. AUGUSTINE'S SEMINARY, STARTED IN 7920,
IS THE NATIlON* S HIGHEST RANKING SCHOOL FOR THE TRAINING OF NEGRO YOUTH FOR THE PRIESTHOOD. ITS LOVELY GROUNDS ARE ONE OF BAY ST. LOCI'!?S GREATEST SCENIC ASSETS.
