were first held by the Rev. Nelson Ayres, who was then rector of Grace Episcopal Church on Nicholson Avenue, in Waveland. The Church was later closed.
In 1889, a sanctuary for Christ Episcopal Church was built in what is now in the 800 b!oek of iNorth Beach. This location prov.
ed to be remote, making it hard for parishioners to attend services. In 1904 the present location was purchased from the late Mrs. Walter J. Gex, Sr., and Mr. Char, les G. Moreau. The original building was moved by rollers to the new location. In later years a parish house annex to the church was built and nine years ago the Church began its most ambitious project, a school which today comprises kindergarten and eight grades.
Baptist
According to fragmentary early records, the firct Baptist Sermon was preached in Bay St Louis in 1846 by the Rev. Benjamin Whitfield. The first church was called Elim Church and had 14 members, 7 white and 7 black. D'aring the Civil War this church was dissolved.
The present Baptist organization was begun in 1896 and a frame church was built on Easter, brook street. In 1947, with the
Rev. John Dearing as pastor, and bought a centrally located lot and with Dr. Thomas Sellers as prin. an army chapel which now has cipal donor, the congregation (Continued On Page 37)
