PACE NO. 2 - GARDEN CLUB HISTORY.
PROCEEDING ON TO FEBRUARY, AN IMPRESSIVE ARBOR DAY CEREMONY WAS HELD IN BAY ST.LOUIS COMMODORE PARK COMMEMORATING OUR BELOVED REBECCA - MRS. LEO SEAL, ONE OF THE FOUNDERS AND FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE BAY WAVELAND GARDEN CLUB. FOLLOWING THE PLANTING OF AN OAK TREE IN HER MEMORY, A TOUCHING TRIBUTE WAS GIVEN BY MRS.
WALDO OTIS. THE BITTER COLD AND INCLEMENT WEATHER COULD NOT DAMPEN THE SPIRIT OF THOSE WHO ATTENDED TO PAY HONOR TO THIS GRAND LADY WHOM WE ALL LOVED SO WELL.
ON MARCH 14th OUR YEARLY PILGRIMAGE WAS HELD, WHEN MORE THAN 400 GUESTS ENJOYED THE HOMES AND GARDENS ON DISPLAY. THE FIRST FEATURE OF THE PROGRAM WAS THE BEAUTIFUL NEW CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH,
BUILT AND RELOCATED WHEN THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE WAS DESTROYED BY HURRICANE CAMILLE. WE THEN ENJOYED THE LOVELY REBUILT MODERN POINDEXTER HOME, WITH IT'S PACIFIC THEME. THEN ON TO MA©JOLIA NO.2, THE SUMMER HOKE OF MR. AND MRS. ED ROWLEY, BUILT TO REPLACE THEIR ORIGINAL HOME WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN 1969. THE LOVELY ORIENTAL TYPE HOKE AND GARDENS OF MRS. IRBY CHARPING IN WAVELAND WAS NEXT ON THE TOUR, FOLLOWED BY A LUNCHEON AT THE DIAMCNDHEAD COUNTRY CLUB. THE CLOSING FEATURE WAS THE DELIGHTFUL NEW DIAMCNDHEAD HOME OF THE WALTER GEX FAMILY, DESIGNED WITH IT'S EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FEATURES FOR TWENTIETH CENTURY LIVING. ^ANY, MANY THANKS TO OUR CHAIRMAN PAT VIGUERIE AND HER CO-WORKERS. - BgmYmXBpiBM EIBXIXXXEXXK. WE EXTEND OUR DEEP APPRECIATION TO ALL OUR FRIENDS WHO OPENED THEIR HOKES AND EXTENDED SUCH GRACIOUS HOSPITALITY TO US AND OUR GUESTS.
THE EXCITING HANDS BEAUTIFICATION AND CLEAN UP PROGRAM INCLUDES NEW AND ADDITIONAL LANDSCAPING ON THE THREE MILE STRETCH OF HIGHWAY 90, REPLANTING AND RESPACING THE OLEANDRR BUSHES PLANTED BY OUR CLUB, ALONG WITH PEAR TREES AND La.'/ GROWING PERIWINKLE BUSHES, WHICH WILL ALSO BE PLANTED IN THE GARDENS OF OUR MEMBERS.
THIS IS A PART OF THE PLANNED HIGHWAY 90 FLORAL TRAIL. THE FIVE HUNDRED YOUNG OAK SEEDLINGS, WHICH ARE NOW BEDDED TO PROMOTE ADDITIONAL GROWTH, WILL LATER BE PLANTED IN THE AREA TO REPLACE SOME OF THE TREES LOST IN THE CAMILLE DISASTER.
THE BEAUTIFICATION OF COLEMAN AVENUE IN WAVELAND AND THE LAND*
SCAPING OF THE NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ARE ALSO PART OF THE HANDS PROGRAM. WAVELAND MERCHANTS ARE GIVING ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CO-OPERATION IN PLANTING FLORAL GROWTH AROUND THEIR PUCES OF BUSINESS TO BEAUTIFY THEIR TOWN, WHICH SUFFERED SO MUCH DESTRUCTION IN HURRICANE CAMILLE.
