And here we are at the beginning of our Bicentennial Year! What a errand and glorious feeling it is to be nearing the end of our Bicentennial project of "200 trees for our nation's birthday"
Garden group will undertake
spruce up campaign
The Bay-Waveland Garden Club and the Waveland Beautification Committee announced a joint project this week to “spruce up” the two communities in preparation for Bicentennial year activities this summer.
The Waveland Elementary School ‘W’ Club, a civic club of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, will assist the organizations in planting 100 pear trees and other plants, and red, white, and blue verbena in flower beds near Buccaneer State Park, Elwood Park, Coleman Avenue, Highway 90, and other parts of the city.
The Garden Club is in charge of planting a holly tree and red, white, and blue verbena on the west lawn of the Hancock County courthouse.
The groups are also working together to plan the annual Arbor Day tree planting ceremony scheduled Friday, Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the Waveland hospitality center] At thli time, planting will begin on the remaining trees for the Garden Club’s Bicentennial project, “200 Trees For the Nation’s 200th Birthday.”
The Waveland ~ Beautification Committee has designated March 11 as Red, White and Blue Day in Waveland, when ‘W’ Club members will sell red, white and blue flower seeds in the community.
Other ‘W’ Club projects include planting red, white, and blue verbena on each side of the sidewalk to be constructed from the beach to Haverty’s Restaurant on Coleman Ave.; cleaning up four city streets in addition to those surrounding the school; and beautifying their own yards.
