“One of Waveland’s post-Katrina challenges is to capitalize 011 our natural assets,” Alderman LiLi Stabler said. “As most of Waveland’s historical sites were blown and washed away Waveland returns to nature to focus 011 our natural beauty. Without a doubt, Waveland’s beach is our greatest asset and the Garfield Ladner Fishing Pier is our greatest^ittraction.”
After* attending a Mississippi Urban Forestry Council workshop in Waveland last fall, Stabler set out to register the Nicholson Avenue of Oaks. There are 46 trees lining Nicholson Avenue between Central Avenue and the Beach,
and although they were distressed after Katrina, they have reformed a natural arch across the street.
Stabler, with the help of Donald Murphy, measured each tree to see which ones qualified for registration. Thirteen Live Oaks met the qualifications (9-1/2’ circumference measured at 4-1/2’ from the ground). The City of Waveland submitted an application for the registration of the group and names them the “Nicholson Avenue of Oaks”. The application was submitted to the Societd des Arbres and was approved.
Then the process began for individual adoptions of the trees. Nine Nicholson Avenue
property owners adopted the trees and were given naming rights. Plaques for the trees were produced by the Hancock County Historical Society and the Bay Waveland Garden Club.
Every 3’ in diameter represents 100 years. To get the age of a tree, divide the diameter by 36. Catherine, the oak adopted by Mike McGuiness is estimated to be 141 years old and Charmaine Head’s The Ruhr Oak and the Breland’s The Wizard are estimated to be 129 years old.
Applications for registration are available at the Hancock County Historical Society or may be downloaded from lilis-tahler.com.
