Shieldsboro (Bay St. Louis, Mississippi)
Birth Place of Wooden Boat Building on the Gulf Coast !
The year is 1810, the location is Shieldsboro, now know as Bay St Louis, Mississippi. This area and others located in Hancock County, were the sites of the majority of the wooden boat building on the Gulf Coast starting from the early 1700's and lasting for decades. Several Master Boat Builders like Jean Marian Aranbum built a large number of wooden boats to service his customers ( New Orleans merchants, Privateers and even a few northerners "Yankees"). They built any type of vessel needed from large three masted schooners used to transport cargo along the shallow waters of the Mississippi Sound, small sail boats used by the oysterman & fisherman of the Gulf, to deep draft schooners used to take Spanish, English, and American Prizes.
Hancock County has a rich history from logging to wooden boat building, So come to the Rendezvous and celebrate our WOODEN BOA T HERITA GE !
