JULY FOHRTH ADDRESS IN BAY ST. LOUIS
Editor's Note:	On July 4, 18?6 the people of Bay St. Louis
gathered to celebrate one hundred years of the Nation's
freedom.	The	Honorable J. F. H. Claiborne,	a silver-tongued
by	the request of	the citizens	and
Srator, aatSt through the recommendation of the President of
the United States (Ulysses S. Grant) and in compliance with a
resolution of Congress, and by request of the Governor of
the State of Mississippi (®0O3CM3CKXSXX Adelbert Ames) j,
delivered the following address. A few personality mentions
at the closing of the address have been deleted, having no
appreciable bearing on the history of this area. At the
closing of the address said: "On these shores, as you have
seen,	the	soldiers	of three nations have	displayed the
standards	of	their	kings. For ourselves	we want but one,
and will have	no other. And	here, in the	presence of Almighty
God, with	the	spirits of our	departed friends as witnesses,
let us swear eternal fidelity to our Union and its Flag."
