Public opinion demanded the name of the town be returned to Bay St. Louis, and the city of that name was incorporated by the legislature on February 24, 1882. Chicapoula, Shieldsborough, Bay St. Louis - the name may have changed, but the personality of the area has remained. People relax leisurely and make an art of enjoying life.
Waveland, "Land of Waves," was once part of Shieldsborough until March 1888 when it applied for a charter as a separate community.
Waveland has long been an established summer retreat and resort for visitors from New Orleans and Natchez. The permanent population came from the descendants of the original French and Spanish settlers.

During Prohibition the territory around Kiln was known for its quality of whiskey as far north as Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Strange tales of giant stills hidden under sawdust piles and rumored connection of Kiln with Chicago's Capone Gang still afford interest.
