EPISCOPAL CHURCH (continued from p 9A)
most solely responsible for reorganizing Christ Church in 1889 and services were held in her home on North Beach. The cornerstone for a new church was laid in 1890 on North Beach near Boardman Avenue. Every member of the small congregation pitched in and assisted in raising money for the building fund.
During the summer children and adults staged out-of-door-so-cials and bazaars, some of which were held beneath the huge oak trees on the lawn of the Pickwick hotel on Beach Boulevard. Children rode about town by horse and buggy selling tickets to plays presented by church members.
The building was completed and the first wedding, that of Miss Paula Van Gohren and W.W. Jenks, was held in November 18-91. In 1901 Christ Church was admitted to the diocese as a mission. Three years later the church was mounted on rollers and moved down Dunbar Avenue to the corner of North Beach and Carroll Avenue.
The church was consecrated in 1913; a parish house erected in 1938 and three Sunday school classrooms added in 1947. The present pastor, Rev. Charles R. Johnson, came from Jackson, Miss., as priest-in-charge of the mission in 1948, and in 1950, with 134 registered communicants, Christ Church was granted parish status.
A seven and one-half acre tract of land at 912 South Beach which now houses the new church, two rectories, a kindergarten, elementary and high school, was purchased in 1951.
Church services were held in the quaint frame building on North Beach until the never-to-be-forgotten night of Sunday, August 17,1969, when Hurricane Camille disintegrated the building leaving only one small twisted cross where the church had stood.
On Sunday, Apr. 18,1971, the beautiful, new Christ Episcopal Church was dedicated.
