In 1849 Eliza Jane Poitevent, a native of Peardington was vorn.
.At 14 she contributed to newspapers and at 23 she married Col. A. M.

Holbrook, editor of the D*£ly Picayune (N.O.) and at his death becamse
the first woman owner-publisher of a major newspaper.
In the 1850's Usan Vaughn, a Pearlington slave blacksmith, owned
by Nezan Favre, developed the famous high wheeled wide tread "carrylog" ^
that made it possible for Coast logging crews to work in wet ground and -fc
haul out logs of any sixe with their sturdy ox teams. A half century
later another Mississippian, John Lindsey of Laurel, developed the eight
wheel oxx wagon that outmoded the "carrylog" and proceded the motor truck

In 1$51 Academy at Napoleon (between Pearlington and G insville)
became the first school with Rev. E. D. Pitts in charge (he later
started the Methodist church in Bay St. Louis).
In 1861-65 during the Civil War, due to confiscation by soldiers -ar.
and robbery by jayhawkers most stores ceased to operate. Salt was
^scarse that women traded home-made hats for salt. Many familiies took
refuge in the Pearl River swamps..
In 1866 the Pgitevent & Farve Lumber Co. was founded. In 1872
the mills were sawing to order, employ 8-10 vessels and could scarcely

1897 The Pearlington Herald began publication.

iN 1899 Etienne William MAXSOty WAS APPOINTED POSTMASTER AT
Pearlington. He later had a career with the U. S. Dept of Agriculture
in Washington, vD. C..	1902
In 1901 the Favre Lumber Company openedHancock B nk
opened and Indian Joe, the last of the Indians being moved to reservation
came back to live at Possum Walk not far from the Choctaw Indian

In 1961 the First Southern Baptist Church of Pearlington was
