WPA funded former Bay St. Louis Post Office (1935-56) at 137 Main Street, Bay St. Louis (FEMA photo 2013)
Tourism declined in the 1930s and resulted in the closure of many hotels. By 1939, when the WPA’s guide to the Mississippi Gulf Coast was published, there were only two hotels operating in Bay St. Louis, one of which was the Reed Hotel/formerly called the Weston Hotel. (Sanborn Maps, 1924, 1930, .1244, Federal Writers’ Project of the Works Progress Administration, 1939).
The Reed Hotel (1924), formerly known as the Weston Hotel, later served as a nursing center. Katrina severely damaged the structure located at 400 North Beach Boulevard, Bay St. Louis. The building caught fire in 2011 and was subsequently demolished (FEMA photo 2009).
