Professor: Most single dads never married
Despite what you see on TV', the average single father is not a divorced man or widower raising his children alone.
Half are fathers who never married, reports David J. Eggebeen, associate professor of human development and family studies at Penn State. He adds most children of such fathers live in households that contain another adult, most often the father’s cohabitat-ing partner.
Going back to school gets more expensive
You’ll spend — or have already spent — an average of $363 per student on back-to-school items this year.
That’s 12 percent more than last year, says an American Express survey of 1,000 consumers nationwide. And 18 percent of those surveyed said they plan to spend $500 or more.
Interestingly, parents say their children will also contribute, pitching in an average of 19 percent from their own savings.
Survey: Ages vary for talks on birds, bees
How do you know when it’s time for a serious mother-child talk?
Most mothers first talk to their children about drugs and alcohol when they are 7, about sex when they are 9, about AIDS when they are 10 and about contraception when they are 12, says a, survey of 10,503 Ladies Home Journal readers.

Coastians remember hurricane of 1947
Dickson Drug Store on the beach in downtown Bay St. Louis was demolished in the storm. The store, located between the L&N bridge and the U.S. 90 bridge, crumbled from wave action.
Only sailors at sea had any indication that something ominous swirled offshore, threatening the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts. Their radio calls gave Coast residents about 12 hours to prepare for the hurricane of 1947.
The daylight storm came ashore early Sept. 19, and the 12-hour warning allowed the fishing fleet to seek harbor in Biloxi’s Back Bay.
