lie with all w-ie strength a person could master when he was wrenched from me and caught with some monstrous shadow of a thing behind his head and a jagged beam under his throat. Where I found the dispensation from panic to extricate him from that, God knows. I held him harder, like a mother.
We learned quickly that we had to keep our legs up because the undertow was pulling us down, and there was more debris beneath the surface than that flying above us. We climbed over pieces of wall and floor and furniture and branches of trees, flattening ourselves up from the undertow and down from the wind. We were virtually crawling over the surface of the water. We finally came to a large piece of roof which seemed stable enough to rely on long enough to consider our next move. We tried to get our bearings; it seemed as though we were skirting the shore of the Gulf, with the palm trees that liqed the beach road to the windward of us. We called out, but the roar of the wind threw our voices back at us. The wind paralyzed us with the sheer coldness. Who knows how much time passed. Ify watch had ironically stopped at midnight, just as this nightmare had begun, and we bad no orientation in time nor space. We called out a-gain for John, and this time we got an answer!
