WILLIAM HARRISON CARTER
William Harrison Carter is the oldest son of Joseph Carroll Carter and Sarah Frances Elder, and was born in Booneville, Miss., August 5th, 1868. He was prepared for college in the schools of his home town and entered the University of Mississippi in the fall of 1888, graduating therefrom with the B.S. degree in the class of 1892. He received the M. A. degree from his Alma Mater in 1903. He was married December 27th, 1894, to Miss Nell Baechtel Doty, of Macon, Miss. He has two daughters, Nell and Lucy, of whom he is inordinately, but justly proud. He is a member of the First Methodist Church, of Columbus, of which he was for several years Sunday School Superintendent. Upon graduation, Brother Carter became professor of Mathematics in Centenary College of Louisiana, remaining there for eight years, leaving that position to accept the same work at the University School for Boys in Georgia. In 1903, he returned to Mississippi and entered the mercantile business in Columbus. In 1914, he sold out his business and became secretary-manager of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, leaving that in May, 1916, to become State Manager for Mississsippi of the Masons’ Annuity.
Brother Carter was initiated, passed and raised in 1904 in Columbus Lodge No. 5. He is Past Master of his Lodge, Past High Priest of Columbus Chapter No. 4, Past Recorder of Columbus Council No. 30, and Past Commander of DeMolay Commandery No. 8. He is^ an active member of Columbus Chapter No. 66 O.E.S. He is a member of Hamasa Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. He served as chairman of the Finance Committee of the Grand Lodge and has probably done his best work for Masonry in that position. He was elected Grand R.A.C. in 1912, and was regularly promoted through the chairs, becoming Grand High Priest at the 1917 Convocation of the Grand Chapter at Jackson. Elected Grand Commander of Grand Commandery, 1928. Elected Junior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge in 1927, Senior Grand Warden, 1928; and Grand Master, 1929.
