RECOJ/>'ENDS COASTAL PEOPLE RAISE SEA ISLAND COTTON AS A MONEY CROP IN ADDITION TO FOOD OF CORN, POTATOES,
RICE AND PEAS
September - 1870
"Handsboro Democrat" of Sept. 10, I87O
printed in Daily Picayune - September 2~, 1870
Some of our people are laboring under the impression that Sea Island Cotton cannot be propagated in this county (Harrison).
This is an erroneous idea.
Nr. Geo. W. Walden planted a small piece of pine land in this cotton, vith but little or no attention or manure, and raised as fine looking cotton as ve have ever seen anyvhere.
He left a stalk in our office last veek measuring about seven feet	high and bearing near a hundred bolls.
This is evidence that the staple can be raised	here	orofitably,
and ve urge our people to go into it next year.
But ve vould suggest also that the planting	of	enough	corn,
potatoes, rice, and peas should not be neglected.
