Science and Technology Laboratory
The Science and Technology Laboratory (STL), a multidisciplined science and engineering organization, is the primary scientific and research arm of Stennis Space Center.
Remote sensing and related image processing and technology application programs continue to be a significant portion of STL’s activities; however, there are now new thrusts for its technical staff in major earth and life science projects. These new projects necessitate ongoing programs in applied research and in sensor and data/information systems development. One of the principal components in the overall remote sensor development program and the land/sea research and applications programs is the specially-equipped remote sensing aircraft.
STL is responsible for developing an in-depth understanding of the environment so that its expertise in remote sensing, data analysis and project management can be utilized in the maintenance of the SSC environment. This activity becomes more important as rocket engine test activities increase and the center’s user community interests broaden.
Satellite-imaging technology developed by STL can assist physicians in improving disease detection capabilities.
The SSC jet contains instruments which simulate satellite sensors.
By developing and proving the concept of remote sensors to aid rocket engine testing, STL supports the principal responsibility of SSC. This same technology has been used by STL in developing thermal imaging systems to assist shuttle launches and landings. Besides STL’s role in shuttle operations, there is continued support of Space Station development and utilization activities, as well as developing new space transportation-related technologies.
STL has a long history of assisting both public and private sector organizations in using remote sensing technology. The laboratory works closely with the Centers for the Commercial Development of Space and other private firms, providing a research base and technical support during commercial development projects. STL maintains a close working relationship with government, academic and industrial laboratories to enhance technology transfer opportunities and improve the United States’ competitive posture in domestic and international markets.
The responsibility for developing and maintaining the long-range science and technology plans for SSC belongs to STL, as well as developing, implementing and managing research and development programs so that STL can support the science and applied research goals of the center and agency.
