The U.S. Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command maintains a Resident Operations Office at SSC. This facility includes a state-of-the-art remote test range and is staffed by personnel uniquely qualified in the area of explosive and hazardous material research. The command’s personnel have contributed significant advances to the safe handling of hazardous materials on every level—manufacturing, storage and transportation.
In addition to classification and evaluation testing of propellant, pyrotechnic and explosive materials, the office has identified many problem areas associated with manufacturing and handling of other hazardous materials, and has developed methods and procedures to reduce or eliminate these problems.
Expertise also exists in the areas of alternate energy sources and pollution control in the production of munitions.
The Mississippi Army. Ammunition Plant, located on the northern portion of SSC, is the nation’s newest and most sophisticated munitions manufacturing facility. The plant consists of three separate manufacturing complexes: the Projectile Metal Parts area; the Cargo Metal Parts area; and the Load, Assemble and Pack area. The plant, which also has support and administrative facilities, employs the most modern advances in manufacturing methods and technology to fully integrate all steps of projectile manufacture at one location.
The facilities are designed to produce the complete round of the 155mm M483A1 projectile for the U.S. Army and NATO allies. This contributes significantly to the Army’s capability to meet requirements for this new type of artillery shell. This projectile provides the Army with greater flexibility and wider area coverage than previous conventional projectiles.
In the test operations center, skilled technicians closely monitor explosive materials research testing.
