The Importance of Ground Testing

This “hot firing” of a Space Shuttle main engine is only one example of the intensive ground test program performed throughout NASA to ensure that every spacecraft, component and system will withstand the rigors of space. The main engines, which power the vehicle and its crew into low-Earth orbit, undergo testing at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center.
