The Fort Maurepas Society of Ocean Springs will present a lecture by Doctor
James "Pat" Smith on the French Colonial history of the Gulf Coastal region,
1699-1763, on Wednesday evening April 14, 1993 at 7:30 p„m. in the Ocean
Springs City Hall. This lecture by this eminent historian-educator is open
to the public and history students will be especially welcomed.
Doctor Smith is a native of Kentucky and graduated with honors in 1966 from Gulfport High School. He is married to Jeanette Holcomb Smith and the couple has two daughters. He is currently Assistant Professor and History Coordinator at USM's Long Beach Regional Campus, having earned his MA and his Ph.D. in History at Vanderbilt University. He is presently conducting research for a projected book on British West Florida, 1763-1783, having previously published a number of articles on national and international history, including several on Canadian and British history.
The Fort Maurepas Society cordially invites the general public to attend this lecture focusing on the importance of the original Fort Maurepas in 1699, its construction and occupation by the French, and its impact in the colonization of the entire lower Mississippi River Valley.
The Fort Maurepas Society was organized in 1992 to complete, outfit and staff the replica of the original Fort Maurepas on the beach in Ocean Springs.
