- ONWARD OAKS
Facing the Bay of Saint Louis and the Mississippi Sound, Onward Oaks (circa 1875) is a raised Creole cottage with Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian influences. The Historically restored 1 1/2 story house is a frame, side-gabled building with undercut galleries spanning both the front and rear elevations. The galleries feature rectangular box columns, wooden decks, and replica of the original balustrades and column brackets. The steep roof is reconstructed using historic photographs of both front and rear elevations. The floor plan of the house is typical of Greek Revival cottages of the period, being a center hall entrance with double-leaf, Italianate-style doors. Eight of the ten pair of French doors are original and two were replicatcd to perfection by a New Orleans miller.
The interior of the house has a 16 foot wide central hall flanked by two rooms to either side. AH ceilings are 12 feet in height. Each of the four rooms has a common fireplace with wooden Renaissance Revival style mantelpieces fluted pilasters and carved designs of the period. One entire fireplace and chimney had to be reconstructed, and a modern kitchen and Master bedroom suite has been added.
The upper level was a single open space that had been finished with beaded board walls and ceiling in the early twentieth century; it has recently been divided to accommodate five bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets. In 1969 this house suffered major damage during Hurricane Camille and was left to deteriorate.
An Olympic size swimming pool with bath house remains and a 3-bay carport with apartment overhead has been added.
