Bay St. Louis, a Mississippi coastal resort city is situated on the western entrance of the shallow bay, also called Bay St. Louis. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway passes just offshore. This home intrigued the owner, because it had been part of
Camp Onward, a United Way camp for New Orleans' disadvantaged children that the owner had attended as a child. The property's oaks and magnolias typify the Southern charm that always means home. Because the owner sought National Register status, they paid fastidious attention to moldings, hardware and other details, even computer enhancing old photos to determine the designs of the porch columns and balustrades. Thirty-six sets of functioning window and door storm shutters were installed. At the front of the home, the parlor and dining room flank the large central hall, with both rooms having French doors opening to the front porch with beautiful views of the Gulf. The cypress mantel and flooring in the dining room are original material. Transom windows and 12 foot ceilings help keep the home cool in the warm summers. A half-bath is tucked behind the stairs, and the kitchen and study face each other across the hall. Upstairs, the owner divided the large space into a sitting room, laundiy room and five bedrooms, each with a private bath. The master suite with cathedral ceiling occupies almost half the upstairs. The glass enclosed porch is air-conditioned and extends across the rear of the home, overlooking theyard and swimming pool. The grounds encompass formal gardens with a fountain, exterior lighting for seafood boil parties and simulated cobblestone paths and driveway, shaded by a dozen moss-draped live oaks.
