EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
PaddleWheel Productions, Inc., a Mississippi corporation, plans to begin a professional musical repertory theatre known as the Troubadours Theatre on Highway 90 at the Bay St. LouisAVaveland early in the year 2002. During the first two years of operation the theatre will introduce five original musicals telling the human and humorous side of history in the South and particularly in Mississippi, four of the five are set in Mississippi, two on the Coast. These musicals will rotate and be interspersed with musical concerts from American musical theatre, and a musical melodrama also set on the Coast. Special performances, using supportive techniques, will be offered each year for the hearing and seeing impaired, and for the developmentally disabled. PaddleWheel Productions works closely with Theatre Plus, a non-profit organization, which will operate a children’s theatre and teach classes in the performing and visual arts for children and youth.
PaddleWheel Productions plans to purchase the property, which contains about four acres, and build a 600-seat auditorium with a 60-foot stage and an accompanying shop for construction of sets and costumes. In addition, a large enclosed porch will serve as the lobby and other purposes, a theatre gift shop and ice cream shop (open all day) and a bar area (open only during performance hours), arena space for children’s theatre, before performances, long folding tables will be added to provide facilities for “A Picnic On The Porch” (catered picnic boxes) particularly to benefit tour groups which like entertainment and food at one location. Contracts with several Coast restaurants will also allow a theatre/dinner combination ticket at a discount price.
Initially, the theatre will present five performances a week: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and matinees on Saturday and Sunday. When attendance warrants expansion, productions will be increased to eight each week. The theatre will operate 50 weeks per year. Initial auditions for the company drew artists from eight states. Auditions for several full and part-time positions will be held as soon as an opening date can be determined. The company includes 18 full-time and 18 part-time members; as productions are added, the company will increase to include 24 full-time and approximately 12 part-time.
Marketing will be extensive in Mississippi and along the Coast from New Orleans to Pensacola.
Marketing will also take place in the 17 states that consistently send tourists to historic spots in Mississippi, since the musicals are history based - with a few twists! Repertory and music theatre are very popular in other parts of the country. Musicals capitalizing on the history, beauty, and warmth of Mississippi provide a unique draw. The Mississippi Coast has no permanent professional theatre company. The popularity of repertory theatre, the uniqueness of the Troubadours Theatre, and the Coast's growing tourist base enhance the potential for success. The location of the theatre with a private entrance opening onto Highway 90 is also a plus. The traffic count on Highway 90 is 18,000 per day. The best access to the theatre from I-10 is Highway 603 (one mile away); 603 has a traffic count of 16,000 per day. In addition, the nearby Welcome Center on I-10 in which brochures will be placed, consistently records more than 30,000 visitors per month.
