Pearlington for sale? You can't be serious
By GEOFF PENDER SUN HERALD
Hancock County Chancery Clerk Tim Kellar says he's had a couple of interesting phone calls since the hurricane from out-of-state people saying they want to buy Pearlington. That's right. Pearlington. The town. "They said they want to develop it into a resort area," Kellar said. "One was from California and one from Texas. I don't know if they are with the same group. I don't know how they got my number." Kellar says he has some doubts about the callers. "There are probably those out there who really could do a deal like that, and those who would just like to," Kellar said. "I think the like-to ones were calling me."
Kellar said his office, operating out of a Quonset hut, has only recently recovered to the point it can start doing property title filings. He said people are making offers left and right on liveable housing in Diamondhead and areas north of Interstate 10.
"It's mainly just people looking for a place to live, not for investment or development," Kellar said. "Lots of people are trying to buy 2 to 3 acre lots to put a FEMA trailer on, then build something later."
Kellar said he has also heard of some people "trying to play on folks' emotions, coming in and making ridiculously low offers" to buy their property.
Keller said he doesn't think it's time yet for a land boom in devastated Hancock County.
"We're still in recovery mode, not rebuild mode yet," he said. "We still have a passel of folks living in tents."
