Family Portraits: Meet the 'forgotten' Mississippians still strugglin rebuild their lives a year after Hurricane Katrina.
WEB EXCLUSIVE
Newsweek
Updated: 2:07 p.m. CT Aug 25, 2006
Aug. 25, 2006 - While the majority of media attention in the year since Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast has focused on New Orleans and Louisiana, the eye of the hurricane actually hit the coast of Mississippi. In Hancock County alone, on the state's west coast, nearly 40,000 families lost their homes. Nearly a year later, the majority of these families are still living in temporary housing. While crowded and uncomfortable, these newfound communities have, at times, eroded social differences, as residents of all races and classes face similar challenges toward rebuilding their lives. These portraits and audio, taken by Adriana Lopez Sanfeliu in July, put faces and voices with the stories of 15 ordinary Mississippians.
