Siftin' on the Back Porch
by Julie M. Yates
Sitting on the back porch that looks into the field of a farm, this is the place where friends come to call. Folks around here know where to come and sh for a spell. Only newcomers go to the front door, not knowing to come to the back porch.
The back porch is where a rocking chair sits near a bench to whittle on while smoking a pipe that you had whittled. That bench has been sat on and whittled on forever. It’s where you turn out the things that you sit on as well as all kinds of wood work.
The back porch is where the family dog has his own place to spend with the family and kin folks and even with people who just stop by to say, “Hi.”
The back porch is a place where you set out the pies to cool, hoping that the friendly animals and the kin folk won’t take a bite or two or even take a whole pie before it’s time to bring them in.
There is a certain place to put your firewood on the back porch to make it easier to fetch in the wood on those wet, cold and stormy days and nights.
The back porch is where you hang your coat and your hat and sit a spell while passing the time of day.
So y’all come and sit a spell on the back porch. See you next time!
