QUARANTINE MATTERS
In a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, Surgeon Hamilton says:
"that in his judgment the Quarantine Buildings should not be so donated as the Government has been obliged to abandon them on account of the danger to the inhabitants on the shore at the request of the people of Mississippi it vould be obviously improper to continue their use for the casee of Yellow Fever natients, and when the new quarantine buildings on the North of Chandeleur Island, a great deal of the material will b« transferred to the newstation.”
In reference to the Inspection Station, he seysr-
"at the western end of the (Ship) island, near the Lighthouse is a large wharf owned by this department, at the shore end of which is a small house, which can be used by the Inspector, and he recommends that the use of that wharf be allowed."
He further recommended that the Inspector appointed by the State of Mississippi be commissioned by the United States and empowered to carry out the rules adopted for the government of National Quarantines and the Quarantine Service of his State, on the application of the State authorities.
The quarantine buildings are not wanted by the State, and the sooner they are removed to Chandeleur Island the better.
