ADELBERT AMES txDS $3,000 FOR
HOKE AND SIXTY ACRES ON BAY ST. LOUIS
September 1, 1873
(Letter from Adalbert Ames, Republican Candidate for Mississippi Governor, to wife Blanche Butler Ames in Massachusetts)
August 20, 1873 - from New Orleans, La.
I left Shieldsboro (everybody calls it Bay St. Louis, which I think the prettier '.iame) yesterday morning at half past seven, immediately aftar an early breakfast; and reached this city two hor.rj and a half afterwards, in company with Gibbs and Raymond.
They were	to go away in the evening,	one by	rail, the
other by boat*	and insisted I should play	a game	of	pin pool
with them. Pin pool is a game played on a billiard table ? the game being to knock down pins instead of hitting balls.
House Bay St. Louis
I am going to tell you now something that will surprise you. Prepare yourself.
I have asked a friend at Bay St. Louis to buy for me a house and some	sixty acres of land, which	are to	be	sold on
the first of September at auction sale, by order	of	the
court-**provided the purchase can be made for three thousand dollars. I hear you say another iron in the fire.
Monday I rode out to see the place. It is a mile and e half from the depot?xarat not in the best situation for the sea breezes, but good for bathing, and far better than Natchez for any and everything.
The house is two-story, and of brick. It was built about twenty years ago at a cost, it is said, of thirty thousand dollars. Whether this be true or not, the bricks in it are worth almost three thousand dollars.
Should we buy it, my plan will be to sell that in Natchez.
Vhile it is not so well located as others at the Bay St. Louis, being too far up the bay, we can make it a very pleasant place?yet, it is not ours.
Love for my beautiful wife and babies.
