Concerning the climate of the Stater the Atlas says: "The Bay of St. Louis,, in the southern part, i s estiimed as one of the most health places in that latitude; and is the retreat for many of tht citizens of K&t.' Hancock County of which B?y St. Louis is the county seat, was established December 14, 1812, during the territorial ea-a. Cn February 5, 1841, this coun, y sas arigixx divided and a portion of it was embodied in the newly formed County of Harrison. Another division took place ff-ebru' ry 22, 1890, when Pearl River County was established.
This settlement was originally known ?s Bay St. Louis. Subsequently it was called Shieldsboroafter Thomas Shields one of the early settlers. For many years both names were used. The &:ayor and Board of Aldermen,, at their first meeting, January 4, 1858, attempted to clarify the matter by incorporating the city under the name of the City of Shi eldsborough.
TMs evidently did not meet with general approbation; so on March 2nd ,1875,. the first name was restored, and the city incorporated as the City of Bay St. Loui s.
In IS28, the present highway bridge xssxx&s across the bay was completed. The total cost for the bridge was $9,753.53. In 1940 it was estimated that the total 24-hour average traffic across the bridge was 2645...Today a bridge of concrete has been started to take the place of the old fire hazard wooden bridge. This new bridge is supposed to be completed in June of 19 53. The cost is to^be near 6 to 8 million dollars.
