It was unbelievable how much was printed in the media about the cold war but very little about China. During the early years after his escape he had kept in touch with family by letter, but the were highly censored. Things began to open during the Nixon administration and now they kept in touch daily over the internet.
On his thirtieth birthday Fred bought a home in the suburbs and sold the high rise in order to be nearer the golf courses. Each morning he would drive his BMW to the station where he would grab a cup of coffee and a paper and catch the elevated train for a thirty minute ride downtown.
He still went to Papa Lee?s but these visits became less frequent. Cheryl was never there and each time they would only say that she wasn?t there. One day he went in and Cheryl was there and he asked if she would like to go out but she said no. He assumed she was seeing someone else.
Not long after this he was on his way to the L and there was a light snowfall. Little did he know his life was to change forever.
Less than a hundred yards from the station the train stalled. The conductor had forgotten the ice scrapers and the wheels were just spinning. We were told we would have to wait to be pushed by the next train.
