America. They settled in South Louisiana and Mississippi and worked in the fishing and oyster industries. These immigrants were referred to as ?Slavs? (Slavic people), and they have many proud descendants that still live in these areas.
The exact spelling of Pauline?s father?s family name is uncertain, but until something else can be found, we will record his name as GIUSEPPE CATENARO. This is exactly how HE signed his Naturalization application in 1884, and this is how the name was pronounced. In later years the family used various spellings of the name. CATTANARO is the spelling used on the baptismal records of the children of George and Pauline Heitzmann in Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church on May 24, 1911.
Other spellings found are as follows: COTTENARO on his Will, CATANERO in the New Orleans City Directory, and CATTARNA on Pauline?s marriage record, etc.
Joseph Catenaro apparently realized his death was near because on February 1,
1889, he wrote his Will and the probate later stated that he died in the month of February in 1889. This Will is recorded in Harrison County Courthouse, Book of Wills I, page 301, case #482. In the Will, Joseph left a small piece of property in Biloxi to ?S.M. Rhodes? which was located on Fayard St. In the Will, Samantha was referred to as ?Rhodes? rather than Mrs. Catenaro. Also, if Joseph and Samantha were legally married, Samantha would have automatically fell heir to the small lot in Biloxi, and it would not have been necessary for Joseph to Will his property to Samantha. If they were not married, this would account for our inability to locate their marriage record If someone could find the baptismal record of his daughter, Pauline, this question could probably be solved. We are fairly certain it is in one of the New Orleans churches, but we have had no luck finding it - perhaps Pauline was baptized under her mother?s maiden name, the Rhodes name, etc.
After Joseph?s death in Biloxi in 1889, Samantha remained there for about one year. Then around 1890, Samantha and Pauline moved back to New Orleans. In the New Orleans City Directory of 1892, we found ?Mary S. Rhodes, widow of John Rhodes? living between ?N. Dolhounde and N. Broad.? In 1898 she appears as Mrs. S. M.
Rhodes, living at 1019 St. Peters. Pauline lived with her mother until around 1896, and after finishing the 8th grade, she moved to Bay St. Louis to live with her half-sister,
Agnes Rhodes, who was married to Jean ?Oscar? Luc of Bay St. Louis (1900 census of Bay St. Louis, house #253). Pauline stayed with them for a short while, and then moved back to New Orleans around 1901 to be with her mother. What appears to be our Samantha is found in the 1900 City Directory of New Orleans Here we find ?Mrs. Mary Rhodes? living at 1313 Bienville Street. With Samantha still living in New Orleans in 1900, we now see why she is not found in any of the 1900 Mississippi censuses with her children. Samantha moved from New Orleans to Bay St. Louis after her daughter,
Pailine, married George Heitzmann in 1904. She lived with Pauline and her family in the Woodman of the World Hall until her death in 1917.
By Joseph Catenaro, Samantha had one set of twins bom in New Orleans on April 22, 1883, according to their daughter Pauline. She told us that her twin sister was named Pailina, and that she died at around 3 months of age in July 1883 in New Orleans.
Pauline also told us that Paulina is buried in New Orleans without a head marker. There wis at one time a small wooden cross over the grave, but it has decayed since then.
Pauline told us that she was told that she was baptized in the ?Little Italian Church? that was run by a group of Nuns located on what was then called ?Customs House Street?
