were Jesse Cameron and Lavina Stanford. See our research titled, ?Jesse Cameron Family of Marion County, MS? for more on them.
Pauline said Samantha, who was born on June 22, 1847, lived with her parents in Marion County until around the year 1862. She also told us that her mother?s older sister, Premilla Cameron, who was married to Mathias (Lundgren) Green, became sick at her home in Hancock County and could not take care of her large family. In early 1862, Permilla called for Samantha, who was only about 15 or 16 years old at the time, to come down to the Coast and help with the family. Samantha came and Premilla died on August 2, 1862, leaving Samantha a house full of children to take care of - some were older than she was! Samantha stayed on at Mathias Green?s place to help with raising her sister?s children. Two years and seven months after Premilla?s death, Samantha married her brother-in-law, Mathias Green, on March 9, 1865. This record is in the Hancock County Courthouse. Samantha was age 17, while Mathias was 52 years old. Pauline told us that Mathias married Samantha to keep ?gossip? from starting about the young Samantha ?living? with Mathias. Pauline also said that Mathias ?took advantage? of her mother, but would not explain what she meant.
By Mathias Green, Samantha had two children. The oldest child, Anesta, died as an infant and is presumed to be buried at English Lookout. The surviving child was Mary ?Josephine? Green, who was age 16 (born 1864) according to the 1880 census of Mandeville, LA where she was living with her mother, Samantha, and step-father, John Rhodes. In the 1900 census of Bay St. Louis, MS, she is listed with her husband as ?Josephine Sharp? born in ?Jan. 1866.? We made contact with one of Mary Josephine?s (usually referred to as Josephine) grandchildren, Mr. Edgar L. Sharp, Jr., living in Mandeville, LA. He told us that Josephine married on February 28, 1881 to Joseph W. Sharp. This date is verified by their record in St. Tammany Parish, Marriage Book #2, page 117. Mr. Sharp also said that Josephine died giving birth to her last child, Daniel. Josephine is buried in Mandeville with a headstone but no dates on it. According to the old Sharp?s Family Bible, she was bom on February 28, 1867 and died on September 21, 1907. The 1867 year of birth is possible, but unlikely, for Josephine would have been only age 14 at the time she wed. Josephine was probably born in 1864 (1880 census),
1866 (1900 census) or between those two years in 1865. With Samantha marrying Mathias Green on March 9, 1865, they may have had a ?shotgun wedding? as Pauline implied. Mr. Sharp has a good photograph of Josephine taken around the time of her marriage. According to Mr. Sharp, Josephine had 15 children. The following dates were taken from the old ?Sharp Bible.? Joseph William ?Joe Bill? Sharp and Mary ?Josephine? Green had the following children in Slidell, LA:
I.	Alphonse Sharp - bom October 26, 1881 and died May 26, 1941. He lived in Slidell, LA and had no children. He married first to Olivia Dittmar and second to Sally Werner.
II.	Joseph W. Sharp - born October 23, 1883. He married Henrietta Roberts and lived in Mandeville. LA. They had two girls: Doris and Frances who lived in Alabama.
III.	Walter True Sharp - born August 14, 1885. He lived in New Orleans, LA and died there on January 20, 1934. He married three times. By his first wife, he had one son,
