splendidly equipped workshop, and later built his new, circular home in keeping.
Core of the Carr establishment is the workshop. Here, from all parts of the country, sent by persons with whom Mr. Carr has been dealing for years, come the belongings from the houses and homes of our ancestors to be restored to their original usefulness and beauty by the unpara-lelled skill of this mast<"? craftsman. Once more in perfect condition, the Chippendale secretaire, the Sheraton washstand, the Lincoln rocker, or the convent bed, takes its place in the display rooms in the house?unless, as so often happens, and as Mr. Carr will tell you with his boyish chuckle, the piece is sold before there is a chance to display it.
Nothing could be farther removed from the dimness and confusion of the average antique shop than these sunlit, uncluttered display rooms where each article is seen with the individual integrity it would command in your own home. The manner of showing these antiques greatly enhances the enjoyment of viewing the collection.
Listening to Mr. Carr recount the history and background of some particularly interesting piece is to feel the full charm of the man's unusual personality. Mind and hand deal daily with the paraphernalia of the past yet there is something of eternal youth about Hugh Turner Carr. The direct gaze probes the future, the laughter that wells up in the man, as naturally as spring water, approves the present, the gentle voice speaks eagerly of new projects, improvements, additions. Perhaps the key to this spirit of youthfulness lies in a viewpoint often expressed by Mr. Carr as he bends to the tools of his art or walks with you about his display rooms . . . "Every day I learn something new? . . .
So yield to the beckoning arrows am! the sorcery of their message for an adventure and a reward unmatched in your annals of following signs that read ANTIQUES.?
A glimpse inside the workshop.
