Nicholas Christian Ladner gave up his claim to Cat Island by 1828 because he was already living with his family at ?The Chimneys?, today?s Long Beach Nicholas? claim was by inhabitation and Spanish permit issued in 1795. Juan?s claim was also inhabitation. Mississippi was just 10 years old in 1828 and many land claims were being settled. Juan first came to Cat Island about 1792 and married Nicholas? Daughter Marie Helene in 1794. There had been many other people on the island including Carco, Moran, etc. Also there had been a small French fort in the 1750?s. Juan and his family were the only ones who stayed after
