U. S. Highway No. 171
Another outstanding route for the tourist is on U. S. Highway No. 171, running South out of Shreveport. On this route the tourist passes through Mansfield,

important trading center of De Soto parish and site the famous Battle of Mansfield. Near Many, on t route, is part of the Kisatchie National Forest, one of t roughest and most picturesque areas in the state, c< sisting of about 400 square miles of sandy hills, w occasional bold outcrops of sandstone.
Highway No. 171 passes through Zwolle, Leesvil and DeRidder into beautiful Lake Charles.
Lake Charles is one of Louisiana?s two sea gates the world. This attractive city is both a resort and growing commercial center for Southwestern Louisiai It is located on the Calcasieu river handy to the vast ri lands, lumbering industry, a productive oil field and t growing daily and beef cattle industry. There are fi hotels, tourist camps, sea food restaurants, fresh wat bathing beaches, public bathhouses, motorboating on t beautiful Lake Charles, fine fresh water fishing and hui ing.
U. S. Highway No. 167
U. S. Highway No. 167, entering the state at Junctii City from Arkansas, is another important route for ton ists. This road passes through the hill section of Nor Louisiana to Alexandria, where it terminates. The fii important town on this route is Ruston, home of Loi siana Polytechnic Institute, the state Methodist orpha age, churches, theaters, and golf course. Ruston is tl center of a rich dairying section. Twenty-three mil south of Ruston is Hodge, where one of the South largest pulp or paper mills is located. Hodge is a mi north of Jonesboro, parish seat of Jackson parish ar center of a large farm trading section.
The next important town on this route is Winnfiel birthplace and home of the late Senator Huey P. Lonj and our present Lieutenant Governor Earl K. Long. Fn miles west of Winnfield is a large salt mine and the onl rock quarry in the state, mining limestone, used large! for road material. Winnfield is the last town of an consequence on 167 exclusive of Alexandria, where connects with U. S. Nos. 71 and 165.
