April 23rd, 1990
This is the next day after my birthday. We had 85 people here to help to celebrate my birthday. One of the biggest days in my life. I was so proud to see many of our relatives in which I had not seen in a long time. I appreciated all the lovely presents but not quite as much as I did seeing so many of my loved ones. Every one seemed to have had a good time, talking, laughing, eating and drinking. But nothing intoxicating. As far as we could count after a lot of folks had left, we counted 85. A few neighbors and Della Sunday School class were here. Chandler and Scottie called from North Carolina, Celest my niece from Cal. called and a few others from nearer by called to wish me a Happy Birthday. I counted 67 cards. All of them were beautiful. Oh, yes! One of my grandsons (Little Johnny Hover) called from five miles this side of Mobile, Ala. Charlotte Ann my granddaughter in Gulfport, Miss ordered a cake made for me; it cost $30.00. It was really pretty. It was about a foot and a half long and one foot wide, was white with yellow edging around the edges and yellow roses and rose buds on top. And was very good to be a bought cake. Then Della made a chocolate cake, a pecan and Sandra made an apricot, Forest Miller had brought a coconut cake and Sis, Volney's wife brought chocolate candy. I think it had nuts in it, then I put a bucket of mixed candies and chocolate squares out and it was all cleaned up. Mr. Arlie Strain gave me three blueberry pies and two bottles of wine, he said that will make you sleep. Eva Gail brought a big basket of all kinds of fruit and Vera brought a large paste board box full of fruit. I want try to tell all the presents as it would take too long but everything was beautiful. Jacqueline gave me a cross, a kind of bronze color a little over a foot high, she made it and its' a beautiful thing. I won't try to tell all the stationary and envelopes also stamps. $22 1/2 worth of stamps. Beautiful pot plants and Deasie Ann and Ray Smith gave me a lovely orchid corsage which I wore on my lavender dress, Jacqueline and Willard had given me, White shoes and a white purse. Lester & Mary Etlic gave me the purse with a five dollar bill in it. Loomis, Linda and Mrs. Louise Hogins gave me books of stamps in my cards. Now that's all I'm going to mention as I'm too tired to write any more. They sang Happy Birthday to me at the church and I told them I was 93 and I was proud of my age because God had seen fit to let me live this long. I also said I love every one of you. They gave me a big applause.
