records of Leake Co. by 1843. He learned that in the early 1840's Texas was offering free land to fanners from Mississippi if they would move there. With a little research, Hilton found that John Lott received a land grant in Harrison Co., TX on December 1, 1839 and was a “married man” at that time(John Lott Land Grant, Texas General Land Office, Austin, TX). John paid taxes on this 860 acre tract for years.
In the 1850 Harrison Co., TX census, p. 504, he shows up as “J. Lott”, age 63 (1787) born in North Carolina. He appears with wife “A. Lott” age 46. They both appear in the
1860	census of Marshall, Harrison Co., TX. He is listed as “J. Lott”, age 70 (1790), bom NC, and she is listed as “Ann Lott” age 60, bom NC. John probably died in early 1863 because probate was started in June 1863 and went into 1864 with Ann Lott named as his widow (Harrison Co., TX Probate Minutes, Vol. E, p. 536).
John and Ann Lott had a large family to include:
A.	Elisha Everett “Ev” Lott - bom February 24, 1820 in MS. He married Mary Ann Lott (his cousin) who was the daughter of Arthur Lott, Jr. (son of the Arthur Lott that was murdered by Indians on May 23,1812 and who was a brother to our Solomon Lott). Mary Ann died in Smith Co., TX on October 7, 1852. Elisha E. Lott married a second time on April 11, 1856 to Anna E. Cook. He died on January 17, 1864 in Starrville, Smith Co., TX. His children by Mary Ann Lott were: William M., Mary Ann, Arthur Thomas, Elisha Everett Jr., and John A Lott. He enlisted with the Texas Infantry as a private and was discharged as a Colonel. There exists an article/report undated that we received from Mr. and Mrs. Hilton Lott titled “Elisha Everett Lott, Strictly a People's Man”, p. 26-27, by Andrew L. Leath. This source goes into good detail about this man, his family, and details of his life in MS. The details had to come from some older family member or a much earlier source. It also tells about Elisha's entry into Texas politics and his popularity in southeastern Texas.
B.	Solomon J. Lott - bom c.1822 in MS and married Martha Lott, his cousin. She was a sister to Elisha E. Lott's wife. He resided in Smith Co. TX. Children were: Elizabeth, John A., Anna, and Arthur Lott.
C.	Mary Sue - bom c. 1828 in MS and married Samuel McKay in Harrison Co., TX. on July 14, 1844.
D.	John James Lott - bom between 1829-1833 in MS and married on December 27, 1853 to Patients Adaline Lott, his cousin and sister to the above Martha and Mary Ann Lott. He resided last in Harrison Co., TX. Children were: Anna, John, and Robert Lott.
E.	Stephen S. Lott - bom c.1832 in Mississippi. In 1867 he resided in Harrison Co,. TX. His brother, John J. Lott had him committed and sent to a lunatic asylum in Austin, Texas.
