Jaaes was the second child and 1st son of John and Mary Litzinger Stockton,
Early in life he chose the sea as his occupation coeaencing before the east ? and by gradual proaotion he became the master of a sail inf vessel 1 trading between Baltimore and European ports, On Feb 22 1826 he carried Eliza Sleaser b 11 Sept 130*} by Rev John Glendy in Bfltisore. Eliza's parents were Christian and Elizabeth Slesser of old Pennsylvania and Maryland stock. About 1635-36 Captain Jaaes Stockton abandoned a sea-faring life and took up his residence in the City of New Orleans, where he was naturally attracted by enterprises connected sore or less with his old calling,	aaong the first	in	which he
engaged was as part owner of a	floating dock	and sarine ways	to	repair vessels.
Later in life he was appointed Harbor Haster of the New Basin Canal, an averme of cosaerce connecting the city of New Orleans with Lake Pontchatrain, This position he held at the tise of his death, On the consolidation of the City under one government, instead of three, in 1852 Hr Stockton was elected by the people of his district to serve as aldersan in the Upper Board of the City Council, He also held positions of honor and trust, and was highly respected by his friends and neighbors,	as an honest,	intelligent and	soral gentlesan,

Hr Stockton was a good accountant and was eaployed as collector for a tiae at the New Canal office and as a clerk on a steamboat running on the Alabama River between New Orleans and Montqotery Ala,
