thrown open and in every instance stolen grain was found on the bags of which still could be seen the government brand. In the Mayor?s own warehouse some bags were found. Those arrested were tried in Fargo, Minnesota, some time later and sentenced to the penitentiary.
A short time later two other men were caught driving wagon loads of hav off the reservation. \\ liile placed in the same cell with Rain-in-the-Face they sawed their wav out of the wooden building permitting him to escape at the same time. One of the mvths that evolved out of this episode
was the story that Rain-in-the-Face swore he someday would tear out the heart of Tom Custer; and that he supposedly did that when Tom died on the Little Big Horn.
Once the newspapers of the country had printed the news of the gold find in the Black Hills, enterprising and adventurous citizens banded together to make a rush on the Sioux domain. Arrested by the military for trespassing upon Indian lands, they quickly were released by the civil courts of the frontier.
